For those of you who are new to the world of web design, common terms can be unknown to you. Although these words and phrases roll off the tongue of us web geeks, they can be confusing to those who are not familiar with them.
So we have put together a quick guide to some common confusing or unfamiliar terms to help you get on your way.
Adwords
AdWords is an advertising service by Google for businesses wanting to display ads on Google and its advertising network. Read more about Google Adwords here.
CSS
Short for Cascading Style Sheets, CSS is a new feature being added to HTML that gives both Web site developers and users more control over how pages are displayed. With CSS, designers and users can create style sheets that define how different elements, such as headers and links, appear. These style sheets can then be applied to any Web page.
Domain Name
A domain name is a unique name that identifies a website. For example, our domain name is dannybarkercouk.skipdns.link.
HTML
Short for HyperText Markup Language, HTML is the authoring language used to create documents on the World Wide Web. HTML defines the structure and layout of a Web document by using a variety of tags and attributes. The correct structure for an HTML document starts with <HTML><HEAD>(enter here what document is about)<BODY> and ends with </BODY></HTML>. All the information you’d like to include in your Web page fits in between the <BODY> and </BODY> tags. HTML is a Language, as it has code-words and syntax like any other language.
Javascript
Javascript is a programming language used in web sites to allow for extended functionality in addition to the use of HTML, PHP and MySQL.
PHP
PHP is the name of the most popular programming language used to create dynamic content for web sites. PHP has a number of different functionalities but the most common being its ability to interact with MySQL databases. Using this language virtually anything is possible in creating a unique and diverse website for your business.
PPC
PPC stands for Pay-per-click (PPC), and is incredibly cheap when compared to traditional forms of advertising. PPC can cost from just a few pence to put your company in-front of potential customers at the exact point they are searching for the product or service you provide.
Screen Resolution
Screen resolution is not the screen size and can be altered to suit your personal preference. Typical screen resolutions are set to 1024×768 or 800×600, with the most common size now being 1024×768 representing the width and depth of the viewing area in pixels.
SEO
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and summarises the methods used to achieve better or higher visibility on Google and other search engines such as Bing or Yahoo. You can read more about SEO here.
Web Browser
A Web browser is a programme which enables a user to display and interact with websites. Web browsers allow a user to quickly and easily access information provided on websites. Web browsers format HTML (and other web languages) information for display, so the appearance of a website may differ between browsers. The most popular web browsers include: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and Safari.
