Less is More in SEO

When marketing your business, you may ask yourself: why use a few keywords when you could use hundreds?

As a society we are used to recognising that usually things are greater when they come in larger quantities. However, when it comes to SEO it’s important to realise that less is actually more.

Too many keywords confuse search engines like Google, and they make it less likely for your business to appear on the top search engine web pages when the results of a search appear.

Search engines analyse each page they find, using the keywords to index them correctly. When someone starts a search on Google, for example, the search engine uses the phrase used by the searcher and matches it against the keywords in its index. The keywords you use tell the search engine whether your webpage is relevant to what the user is searching for. Therefore using a few keywords gives Google or other search engines a clearer focus on what your webpage has to offer, whereas using multiple keywords can confuse the search engines who are not sure of what exactly can be found on your site. Search engines look from the perspective of the searcher, and will decide on which pages are most relevant against other pages.

That’s not to say you can’t use multiple keywords in your entire SEO strategy: just make sure that each page is focused to few relevant key points, and ensure that each product or service you offer has its own page so that keywords do not become mixed up.
